The Institute For Justice Getting Involved

We have some new developments going on in the Cottage Food department. The Institute for Justice is suing the Dept. of Agriculture on behalf of two home bakers here in Minnesota. They want to help get the restrictions lifted.

As you may know it is illegal to sell our baked goods from our homes and is only allowed at farmer’s markets and community events such as fund raisers and bake sales. Selling baked goods illegally can get you up to 90 days in jail and/or a $7,500.00 fine.

Our goal has been to change the law in accordance with the legislative procedures by petitioning our representatives and asking that they change the law. We did get our cause to a vote in the House of Representatives last year and we lost by only 10 votes. We have been speaking with our different reps and receiving positive responses from them, with promises of their support.

We are trying to decide if this will have a positive or negative effect on our cause. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I have attached links for two articles concerning the Institute for Justice below.
